‘Von dutch’ - An introduction into Charli XCX’s party girl era alongside friends

Charli XCX has made quite an explosive introduction with her latest single “Von dutch” as she teases out her new album Brat set to be released June 7th. “Von dutch” is cheekily named as a reference to her preceding lyric “I’m just living that life” which is a larger reference to Paris Hilton’s The Simple Life show, where Paris would be seen in head-to-toe Von Dutch branding as she struggled her way through everyday tasks and chores.

Produced by EASYFUN, the short yet action-packed single is filled with terse instrumentals and a punchy beat, all layered over with Charli’s heavily autotuned vocals. The aggressive production and writing don’t leave much to be desired, providing clear insight into the rest of the album's sound.

Diving deeper into the track, Charli makes sure to let the listeners know that she isn’t afraid to dive head-first into the mess of celebrity culture. Instead of pushing back against the TMZs of the world, Charli is embracing it, indulging in all the hearsay about her. She addresses the opposition, claiming that while she’s living her best life, her name is still occupying the minds and mouths of those watching for her downfall, yet she is still far from that.

Only about a month after she released “Von dutch”, Charli then released “The von dutch remix with addison rae and a.g. cook”. For those who are already familiar with the hyperpop scene, A.G. Cook should be a very familiar name as he is both the founder of the PC Music label and essentially, one of the trailblazers of the hyperpop sound we know today. In the "Von Dutch" remix, we are introduced to a fresh set of lyrics from both Charli and TikTok sensation turned pop star Addison Rae. The lyrics explore similar themes as the original recording and the record is notably accompanied by a piercing scream from Addison that surprisingly fits the overall vibe of the remix and the chaotic vision Charli has for this new era of her music career.

To begin promoting both tracks and the upcoming album, Charli hosted a Boiler Room set in Brooklyn, New York which was the highest RSVPed event in Boiler Room history. She has also just announced performances in key cities around the globe (which has also quickly sold out) to continue promoting the album and managing to create a sense of FOMO, alluring listeners and fans to try and get invites to Charli’s exclusive “parties” whenever she comes to town.

“Von dutch” is only the beginning of a manic era of parties, rave culture, good friends, and so much more. With Brat set to release in a couple of months, we’re anticipating this summer to be one for all the party girls.
